John
Henry "Doc" Holliday was born on August 14, 1851 in Georgia. He was a
hard-drinking gambler, gunfighter, and oddly enough, a dentist who is mostly
remembered for his involvement in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and his
friendship with lawman Wyatt Earp.
Holliday came to the Arizona territory and the silver-mining boomtown of
Tombstone in September 1880. Soon he became involved in the messy local politics
and violence in Tombstone. Some of his squabbles there with the local cowboys
led to the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral on Wednesday, October 26, 1881. Doc
Holliday was said to have killed Tom McLaury with his shotgun and was grazed on
the hip by a bullet during the gun battle. He was arrested for murder for his
involvement in the gunfight but was later acquitted of the charge.
Holliday
died November 8, 1887 of tuberculosis. He was 36.
